Good Deed for the Day
Dive Against Debris & Beach Clean
Diary of a Dive Instructor on Koh Tao
It makes sense that we should do our part to keep our local area clean. Today a bunch of staff members, instructors in training & divemasters got together at 9am to do both a land clean and an eco dive. I was amazed at the amount of litter that we gathered up! Keep your eyes peeled for a blog post detailing exactly what we got up to on the Simple Life Eco Day.
It started out with a land clean. We took to the Simple Life private beach area, all the way along the Sairee beach front and back via the walking path, collecting every single bit of litter that we could find. In the end we gathered something like 10+ bin bags full of junk! We uploaded all our of our data to the Clean Swell App, and we were sure to recycle and dispose of everything in the best way possible.
The main culprits on land were:
- cigarette butts – 484 collected
- plastic bags – 351 collected
- straws – 64 collected
The afternoon took us to our local Sairee reef in front of Simple Life Divers, for the Project Aware Dive Against Debris at our adopted dive site. I was the leader of a group of 5 and we took the direct route out from the beach. Different teams took to different areas of the reef so we could be as efficient as possible in our search patterns.
Although our adopted reef was relatively clean today, the main offenders in the water here are definitely fishing line and netting which strangle coral and entangle wildlife. We made sure to record everything we found in the Project Aware App so that we can make more than just a cosmetic difference – we can encourage legislative change.
I started an OW course with a Scottish person this afternoon [wayhey], and will be squeezing in a couple of Adventure dives with another student tomorrow afternoon to get them their advanced certification. I love being busy!
I have been incredibly fond of this song for a long time. The first time I heard it it really moved me, because I completely agree with the sentiment.
“You don’t give trash or pollution back to nature, you give love back.Lyrics from Back To Nature, by Nightmares On Wax
You give some of your energetic goodness back to the earth.”
