Diary of a Scuba Instructor on Koh Tao
I had a pretty relaxing morning before heading to Simple Life at 10.30am. I met 2 folks that were booked in for the Discover Scuba Diving experience on the afternoon boat.
What a pair of naturals! As with all things, some people take to scuba diving quickly and easily, for others it can be a bit more of a challenge. These guys had already done a DSD a couple of years ago, and I think that stood them in good stead. With the skills performed without difficulty on the line, we had a lovely dive at Pottery, followed by an even better one at Junkyard. Schools of Batfish, Titan and Yellow Margin Triggerfish and a couple of juvenile Blotched Porcupinefish were amongst our beautiful sights. The vis is now a respectable 6-8m – and the best it’s been in a while!
My favourite part of the afternoon was the jumping, flipping and swimming around the boat with Shwe the boat boy. He totally tricked me after sinking into the water…never to resurface. I mean, I know these guys can hold their own but I was a little bit alarmed that he had completely vanished! About 5 minutes later, there I am, jumping in with a mask on to search for him when I glance up at our neighbours on the Impian Divers’ boat, only to find their boat boys laughing at me, and Shwe dripping wet, howling hysterically alongside them!
The evening sunset led us to the Sairee Food Hub for some delicious grub. We tried some nibbles from The Chip Shop (the Simple Life managers’ mini-venture), enjoyed the delicious Kao Soy Tofu and grabbed some vegan treats from The Factory pop up. Lovely vibes and company, and my Mum got to hang out and meet more of the folks from Simple. I’m feeling a wee bit sad that I’ll be leaving on Sunday for over a month. I’ve made a family and a home here… but I know I’ll be back. I’m away to visit my first family and home and that’s pretty awesome too.
